How it is calculated

How the estimate is worked out

For each Indian port and US destination, we take every sailing the carriers have scheduled to depart 30 Oct to 27 Nov 2026 and count the days from departure (ETD) at the Indian port to arrival (ETA) at the US port or ramp.

Transit days = ETA at destination − ETD at the Indian portFastest = the shortest sailing in the window; Slowest = the longestTypical = the median: half the sailings are quicker, half are slower

The direct count is the number of sailings that reach the US without changing ships. The main hub is the port where most of the other sailings tranship, often Colombo or Singapore on India–USA routes.

A route only appears once it has enough sailings in the window to give a fair range. If your pair has no figures, try a nearby US port or another Indian gateway, or ask us for a routing.

Good to know

Port to port is not door to door

These are ocean days only. Add time for export customs and stuffing in India before the sailing, and for US customs clearance, terminal pickup and trucking after it.

For an inland point such as Chicago or Memphis, the carrier discharges the box at a US port and carries it on by rail under the same bill of lading, so the figure already includes the rail leg.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does sea freight take from India to the USA?

Usually about 40 to 62 days port to port: that is the typical (median) range on most routes for sailings scheduled to depart 30 Oct to 27 Nov 2026. The quickest sailing took 18 days. It depends on the Indian port, the US destination and whether the ship tranships; a few sailings with long transhipment waits take much longer.

Where do these transit times come from?

From the carriers' published sailing schedules for departures 30 Oct to 27 Nov 2026, covering 283 Indian port and US destination pairs. It is a snapshot, not a live feed: carriers change dates and vessels often, so treat the figures as a guide and confirm the sailing when you book.

Why is there such a gap between the fastest and slowest sailing?

Most India–USA sailings tranship at least once, usually at a hub such as Colombo or Singapore, and each carrier's service calls at different ports on the way. A sailing with a quick connection and few port calls arrives much sooner than one that waits for its connecting ship.

Do the transit times include customs and trucking?

No. They run from departure at the Indian port to arrival at the US port, or at the rail ramp for inland points. Allow extra days for export clearance in India and for US customs clearance and delivery to your door.

What if my route has no transit time?

It means there were not enough sailings on that pair in this snapshot to give a reliable range. The calculator suggests nearby US places that do have data. We can still quote it: ask us and we will find a routing.
