The US is one of the most important markets for Indian shippers, and most container shipping from India to USA moves on a few busy lanes. Knowing them helps you pick the right port pair, estimate transit time and budget your India to USA shipping cost. Here are the top India–USA trade lanes with sample rates, from Atmavaan, your India to USA freight forwarder.
Most cargo leaves from Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) and Mundra, the main Ports of Loading (POL), with Chennai serving South India. On the US side, the key Ports of Delivery (POD) are Los Angeles and Long Beach on the West Coast, and New York/New Jersey, Savannah and Houston on the East and Gulf coasts.

This is the most common question for India to USA shipping cost planning.
Choose Mundra if: You are shipping from Gujarat, Rajasthan, or North India. Mundra to Los Angeles/Long Beach is our cheapest and fastest lane in the table — $2,200–$2,800 for a 40′ HC and 24–28 days. It is ideal for West Coast buyers and for cargo that needs to move fast.
Choose Nhava Sheva if: You are shipping from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, or South-Central India. Nhava Sheva offers more sailings to the US East Coast, especially to New York/New Jersey. If your buyer is in the Northeast, the slightly higher India to USA shipping cost from Nhava Sheva is offset by lower US inland trucking.
For South India shippers: Chennai is your natural gateway. Most Chennai to Los Angeles services involve transshipment, so transit time varies. Check the schedule before you commit to a delivery date.
As your India to USA freight forwarder, we recommend matching the Indian port to your factory location first, then the US port to your buyer’s warehouse. That saves both transit time and inland cost.
FCL (Full Container Load) is best when you have 15 CBM or more, or 10+ pallets. You get a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container, faster transit, and lower per-unit cost. All rates in the table above are FCL rates for 20′ and 40′ HC containers.
LCL (Less than Container Load) is best for small shipments of 1-10 CBM, samples, or trial orders. You share container space and pay only for the volume you use. LCL is cheaper upfront but can add 5-7 days for consolidation and deconsolidation in the USA.
Rule of thumb: If your shipment is over 12 CBM, compare FCL vs LCL — FCL is often cheaper than LCL at that size. For urgent samples, ask about air freight instead.
West Coast and inland rail buyers often choose Mundra or Nhava Sheva to Los Angeles/Long Beach for the shortest transit. Buyers in the Northeast and Southeast usually prefer New York/New Jersey or Savannah to stay close to their warehouses, while Gulf Coast importers ship to Houston.
Coast and distance: West Coast lanes are shorter, while East Coast lanes cost more but sit closer to many buyers.
Season: the peak season surcharge and Q4 demand lift rates.
Routing: direct services and transshipment change both price and transit time.
Fuel and capacity: bunker costs and vessel space move rates from week to week.
Add-ons: terminal handling, documentation and inland delivery are extra.
